"Golan and Ryan" contains an excerpt from a poem by Golan Haji. The audio was recorded at The Saifi Urban Gardens by Ryan Van Winkle as part of an interview for his Scottish Poetry Library Podcast.

One afternoon, on a rare occasion when Ryan had nothing to do, I took him out onto the streets of Beirut. I loved Jorgen Leth's reinterpretation of his own film "The Perfect Human" for Lars Von Trier's 5 Obstructions and was keen to make a similar portrait of Ryan as a young poet in Lebanon.

Naeema was leaving for Baghdad the next day to work on one of her creative advocacy projects. She joined us that evening, in time to see Ryan get his shirt off and paint an arabic translation of his poem "The Flood" on his chest.

I don't really consider myself to be a photographer but if I was told I was going to die in a week the first thing I'd probably do is grab a camera. I'm not sure why. Seems like a complete waste of time. The same happens when I slip into alcohol induced amnesia.

My photo has been selected to take part in the exhibition "Blink", part of the East London Photomonth and curated by Jo Galvin (www.joannagalvin.com). It was taken while I was sober and very much alive. That is why i like it so.

The corresponding video will also receive its premier on the opening night. I am very excited about that.

"Blink" opens on the 3rd of November at The Long White Cloud, Hackney Rd.

In February/March this year I took a trip home for Martin's 30th Birthday. Him and Paddy stomped on my head in a shit club that used to be called the honeycomb. They had a guy selling about 100 different colognes in the toilet. On my way back I spent a few glorious days in the Yorkshire Dales with Jake De Nagy Master. We shot the footage for what will one day be our video collaboration "Hairy Moors".

A month ago we broke into the Stoke Newington graveyard to shoot a video for a song that didn't exist. Brittany had 5 hours before she had to return to New York.

A week later Jack was over from Sweden for two days. After breakfast we spent the afternoon recording. I took the song to Jimmy's and we put it all through his beautiful valve amp. Sean added his bass and I recorded the verse from my sick bed on monday. The whole time Becki had been editing away.

30 days later Gyre Carline is the first video ever to be aired on the radio!

Reel Festivals, Lebanon.

Reel Festivals 2011 was our most ambitious event yet, and aimed to host events in Syria, Lebanon and Scotland, focusing on cultural exchange and interaction. Unfortunately due to developing events in Syria we have had to postpone events there, but our thoughts are with the people there and we aim to return there when possible. Instead we had a focused programme of events in Lebanon and Scotland, both of which featured Syrian elements alongside Scottish and Lebanese films, music and poetry. Scottish band Shooglenifty came to Beirut for 4 days as part of Reel Festivals and performed alongside Lebanese musicians in Beirut’s legendary Music Hall on the weekend. Art music legend Bill Drummond worked alongside Lebanese graffiti artist Siska to spread Bill Drummond’s mantra “Imagine Waking up tomorrow and all Music had Disappeared”. Lebanese, Syrian and Scottish poets performed new translations of each others work to rapt audiences. As one audience member put it: “It fairly makes a difference when you know the poetry makes a difference.” In Lebanon Scottish film-makers had audiences spell bound, with the Wicker Man making Time Out Beirut’s Classic film of the month and Amy Hardie and Lou McLoughlan leading excellent Question and Answer sessions. Then in Scotland we were very proud to see packed audiences for our Syrian and Lebanese screenings, particularly those with directors present. Hady Zaccak from Lebanon presented A History Lesson and Syrian directors Reem Ali and Soudade Kaadan both screened their films to great success. Right now we need these sorts of interactions more than ever, and we’ll be uploading footage of some of these discussions on the site soon.

Now we’re looking forward to continuing the festival through the creation of new works, with a film currently being edited by Scottish Iranian Film maker and musician Roxana Vilk, DJ Dolphin Boy putting the finishing touches to some Syrian and Lebanese mixes and a forthcoming e-book of the poetry translations. We aim for these boundary crossing collaborations to continue and develop, there will be more!

Galloway is about a time before internets and computers when rainy days meant you had nothing better to do but play with windmills and mountains. New Zealand can be a very wet place, just like Scotland. We love rainy days. Our memories are drenched in them.

Jonas's life stor, the very short version

When Jonas was 11 his Mum and Dad sailed him and his sister around the world from Germany to New Zealand on a boat. When they arrived he built a beautiful house on a hill in Pataua over looking the bay.
Shortly after he began building a giant luxury catamaran with his friends in a barn at the bottom of the hill. I remember going in there was like visiting an undercover alien space program. The boat was so futuristic and made Jonas look like a young astronaut from Nasa.

When his Dad died Jonas and his Mum carried on the project, never having built a boat before. It took them 8 years. Putting it in the water was pretty tense.

As far as I know The Happening first began at the Forest Cafe in 2001. It was my introduction. Chris Palmer was playing with projections and mirrors against a giant white sheet draped over the cafe's window while Dirk Markham played his famous one man band set with cymbals on his feet accompanied by his little yellow ukulele. I remember Chris was projecting a video of a man free falling through the sky, or was it a bird? I cant remember.

The happening has been a highlight of my year ever since.

Our first major on stage gig at cassette as the smoking hot bitch fight was incredible. Jonas dressed up as a Mountian. Mat went topless. Improvised gigs are always hard to remember afterwards unless they are recorded. From what I do remember this was very special.

After taking heed the advice from my location scout Johnny Egdell, Tim, Haley and Myself took off on a days trip to find the scene for the Humanimal film.
We trekked through the forest in a thunder storm looking for the perfect spot until a small wagtail fly down infront of me and started doing a wee dance. In true Carlos Castenada tradition we had found our set.

The Balkan Invasion

The Balkan Invasion invited contemporary musicians from Scotland and the Balkans
to compose original new works at the Forest in Edinburgh in April and May 2006.
Made possible by the Visiting Arts Creative Collaborations in Music Awards,
Balkan Invasion is the latest of many Scottish and former Yugoslav artists’ events
organised by Firefly International since 1999. The material contained in this recording
was performed in venues across the UK including Glenuig Hall
in the North West Highlands of Scotland supporting Bonnie Prince Billy
and Harem Scarem, Stereo in Glasgow, The Forest in Edinburgh and
the Battersea Arts Centre in London.

The participants included members of Edinburgh’s own gypsy brass generals
Orkestra Del Sol (Glastonbury, Thames Festival),
Fopp award winning hip hop troupe the Abdominal Showmen (Scottish Hobo Society),

Visitors Arrive: The band will be taken to their accommodation with time to settle
and rest before meeting.

Meet at the Forest 7pm.
The Jimmy Joyce Rolls Royce band meet with the Edinburgh musicians involved.

Tuesday 18th April
Meeting at the Cave Studio @ 12pm to plan and discuss outline for project,
ideas and define which groups are working together.

Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th April

Start rehearsing. The overall group will be split into three working groups for the
duration of the project.

Friday 21st April

Continue Rehearsing. Meeting with all musicians at the Forest, 6pm,

Contaminated, Cirkus Gallery, SKC Belgrade

Contaminated was celebration of the dance between good and evil, Man and woman in the heart of what was still at the time felt like quite a tense city to visit.

I don't know if it still is but Belgrade in 2003 and 2005 still housed a chunk of buildings wrecked by the Nato bombs. I remember staying with Miroslavs friend Jonny in 2003 and sensing still a fair amount of hostility towards britain in him and some of his friends we met. Being Scottish helped alot though. People allways love Scotland.

The exhibition came about when we were organising our second tour of the Balkans with the charity Firefly. I was really keen to make some new work while we were travelling and I was put intouch with Paula Miklosevic through my friends Milena and Miroslav. Paula was curating the Cirkus Cirkus gallery in the Belgrade Kultural Centre at the time and invited me to exhibit there, even though it was primaraly a photography Gallery she felt my collage work fitted well.

Upon reaching Belgrade, similair to the exhibtion Jake and I had completed in Cologne I spent three days scouring the city for Collage material without much luck. It was only when I stumbled across a tiny bookshop in a side street basement in the north of the city did I find a golmine. I still feel quite guilty as I cleared the old man out of his magazine collection for little over $30. He seemed happy though.

Jake (Jacob William Bee) was invited by members of the Edinburgh's Proto Academy in 2004 to be a part of their exchange exhibition Span which was to take place in a long tunnel that runs underneath the road of the Deutzer Bruke in Cologne, Germany.

Jake very kindly asked me to work with him on the project. Initially he wanted to work with references from Philip Pullman's book "The Northern Lights" to make an instillation that played with dust through beams of light in the tunnel. This would have been totally awesome and we should still do it one day but we decided instead to spend our days scouring the city with a shopping trolley for interesting pieces of junk.

I recommend it as a great way to get to know any city you visit for the first time.

Punk's Not Dead.

During our Month long Tour of the former Yugoslavia we were based mainly in the small

border town of Brcko in Bosnia. Below is a picture of the local Dom Kultura where we held

the annual Scot Fest. I think I remember walking out onto stage with a bottle of cider but that

could have been in 2005, I don't quite remember.

Ryan took off at one point and organised a show for us in Banja Luka. The SKC venue was amazing.

An old Amish looking wooden stage in a huge garden that lead down to a river with hammocks on

the trees. It was filmed for Pink Television. I swapped clothes with Donnie,

He wore trousers and I wore his Kilt.

After Banja Luka we travelled by train to Mostar where Mac met the group and we performed at

The Alternativni Institute as well as helping preparations for the Mostar International Festival at

Abrasevic, previously the site of an important youth centre. It would be the first time anyone had

held a cultural event at Abrasevic since the end of the war.
